Community Steps Up to Help Students in Need

Fri, 2016-07-29 14:57 -- ehill

Thanks to the generosity of many donors, all children have been "adopted" at this time!  We are still accepting donations of backpacks, school supplies, and packages of new socks and underwear, which will be donated to area schools to help kids in need throughout the year.

Thank you to everyone who has signed up to "Adopt-a-Child". Donations can be dropped off at the United Way at 200 Main Street in Bristol on either Tuesday, August 9th or Wednesday, August 10th between 9 am - 4 pm. To get involved, please call or email Kimberly Hernandez at (860) 582-9559 x 405 or KHernandez@uwwestcentralct.org

More about the Adopt-A-Child Back to School Program: The first day of school can be a tough time for needy children whose parents cannot afford a nice outfit and/or appropriate school supplies. A child’s self-image has a dramatic effect on performance in the classroom and can lead to lasting changes.

United Way believes that the first day of school is an important event in a child’s life. To help kids get the year off to a good start, we began the Adopt–A–Child Back to School Program in 1999, when we served 30 children. We have continued this program each year and it has grown dramatically, with over 700 children served last year alone.

Donors supply a backpack, school supplies and an outfit for the first day of school. United Way will provide you with a Child Information Sheet for each child that you adopt including the child’s age, favorite color, specific clothing sizes, as well as a list of school supplies needed.
